5 Young Adult Book to Movie Adaptations
Young adult books adapting into movies isn’t a new concept,
but in the past couple of months, it seems like more and more are being
planned. I wanted to share my thoughts on some from the past and more recent
adaptations.
Spectacular Now- Tim Tharp
Book Published:2008
Movie Released 2012
Stutter Keely deals with alcoholism in his senior year of
high school. This movie strayed a bit from the book, small details here and
there. There was also the ending of the movie was completely different than the
book, which was a bit annoying to me. However, the movie was still enjoyable.
Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller both star in this adaptation.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower- Stephen Chbosky
Book Published:1999
Movie Released: 2012
The book and movie of The Perks of Being a Wallflower hold a
special place in my heart. I’ve read and watched Perks multiple times and
honestly just love it. I thought the adaption was very well done. Logan Lerman,
Ezra Miller, and Emma Watson do a great job on taking the roles of their
characters.
Hunger Games- Suzanne Collins
Book Published: 2008
Movie Released: 2012
I read The Hunger Games series back in middle school/ early
high school. I honestly thought the books were a bit overhyped and to me, they
were just okay. I did end up enjoying the movies more than the books. The
movies were more entertaining for me. It was very well produced. However, what
is up with the last book being turned into two movies?? Others like this include
Harry Potter, Divergent was supposed to be like this, but I don’t know if the
last movie was ever made. I know it is just for money and I find it annoying.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones- Cassandra Clare
Book Published: 2007
Movie Released:2013
I loved this series, and I am planning on rereading it soon.
However, we all know this movie flopped. It was not well done at all, and then
they turned it into a t.v. series, Shadowhunters. I don’t know how the t.v.
series is because I have yet to watch it. The movie was just a big letdown,
especially since the book and the Moral Instruments series was really good.
Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (AKA Love, Simon)- Becky
Albertalli
Book Published:2015
Movie Released: 2018
I read Simon v. the Homo Sapiens Agenda earlier this year and loved it. It had been
on my to-read list for quite some time, but I wanted to wait until closer to
the movie coming out so I could compare. The movie differed from the book, just
small details here and there, however, I thought the movie was almost as good
as the book.
Books I have read, but have yet to seen the movie:
The Hate U Give- Angie Thomas
Book Published: 2017
Movie Released: 2018
I read The Hate U Give earlier this year and I loved it so
much. I knew I had to read this novel after the amazing reviews it got and
after hearing it was being turned into a movie later in the year. So far, I
have heard really good reviews about the movie.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post- Emily M Danforth
Book Published:2012
Movie Released: 2018
It has been a while since I have read The Miseducation of
Cameron Post, but I remember thoroughly enjoying it. The novel deals with a
protagonist that identifies as LGBT, but her family doesn’t approve and sends
her to conversion camp. When I heard it was being turned into a movie, I was so
excited.
What are your thoughts on book to movie adaptations? Which
are some of your favorite? Are there any that you truly hate? Any that you are
excited about that are coming out soon?
